The bar has been risen, again. This past weekend, at Waterfest 23, Tyler Aul, of USP Motorsports, piloted his MK7 GTI into uncharted territory, breaking the 140 MPH barrier at two separate drag strips on the same day. Ultimately, Tyler captured the quarter mile world record for both trap speed and elapsed time, for any MQB platform vehicle anywhere in the world. True to his outspoken nature, he set the record with hundreds of spectators gazing on. It was a sight to be seen as he raced alongside an Alpha 9 GTR, pulling out a better trap and ET to the crowd's delight. Congratulations Tyler!
Tyler's vehicle is a VW MK7 GTI with a 2.0 TSI EA888 Gen 3 engine and DSG Transmission. Unlike the typical record setters on the MQB platform, his vehicle only has front wheel drive and is a non-power pack model. The engine is outfitted with an off the shelf APR EFR7163 Turbocharger System with several new development and prototype parts and software.
The EFR7163 has proven to be shockingly capable. It's designed for the circuit and daily-driving with excellent transient response, making it a pleasure to drive in all scenarios compared to larger, and laggier turbos often more ideal for drag racing. However, despite the smaller size, it was able to propel the GTI to over 140 MPH in the quarter and clench the record even under less than ideal conditions. APR Stage 3 B8 A4 Quarter Mile| 01/25/2016
On Sunday, January 24th, we headed to Montgomery Motorsport Park to test our new APR Stage III EFR6758 Turbocharger System in the quarter mile. The car was driven to the track in its currently daily driven form, on street tires, with 93 octane fuel and a full interior, in an effort to show real world results most customers will experience on a day-to-day basis. Several passes were conducted, resulting in record breaking pass after record breaking pass. Ultimately, Trevor@APR, the owner of the vehicle, was able to achieve a firstname.lastname@example.org MPH after cutting a 1.733 60 FT time!
The fueling system was unmodified, resulting in power limitations below the capabilities of the turbocharger system. Temperature at the track during the record pass was roughly 50F, resulting in a density altitude of roughly -575 feet. Unfortunately, the negative density attitude did not result in a sizable performance benefit compared to running in warmer conditions due the fueling system limitations. However, beneficial to APR customers in warmer climates, the above results are still applicable.
As temperature drops and air density increases, so does the need for more fuel to satisfied the air fuel ratios prescribed by APR's calibration experts. To safely prevent the engine from running out of fuel in cooler conditions, APR's calibration experts have calibrated the ECU to reduce boost pressure while targeting the same power levels. The APR High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) increases maximum volume of fuel the HPFP can deliver by 37% over stock! In doing so, the direct injection fueling system is capable of satisfying fueling requirements set forth by high horsepower setups. This is accomplished by increasing the displacement of the pump using high quality components to exacting tolerances. On the B9 2.9T we achieved an additional 37 AWHP and 50 AWFTLBS over our Stage 1 (E85) ECU Upgrade by adding the pump and running our Stage 1+ (E85) ECU Upgrade!
