APR Ignition Coils
APR Ignition Coils are designed to be a direct plug-and-play upgrade to factory coils, and provide greater energy output, ensuring a stronger and more consistent spark. The commonplace replacement of factory ignition coils with those taken from the higher output Audi R8 is popularly believed to provide greater energy output. However, testing proves that they are no more powerful than the factory coils that are found on other engines. APR Ignition Coils increase energy output by up to 6% over stock. They are a direct upgrade or replacement, and come with a unique red housing! How does APR improve the factory ignition coils?
We prioritize performance. Our ignition coils are engineered to maximize efficiency by increasing the diameter of the copper windings, reducing resistance while maintaining the necessary turns to sustain optimal voltage levels. We enhance the size and strength of the neodymium magnets—all within the physical constraints of the coil’s design. Additionally we upgrade the silicon steel shield which aids in less energy loss with improve flux flow on pencil style coils. Voltage regulation is meticulously controlled through a series of Zener diodes, allowing for precise management of resistance and primary inductance. Primary inductance is crucial as it determines the amount of charge the coil can store before firing, yet it must be balanced to ensure proper functionality across the full operating RPM range. This engineering approach results in an ignition coil with increased energy output, delivering a more powerful spark that promotes a cleaner and more complete fuel burn.
Why don't the factory coils have these upgrades?
Automobile manufacturers constantly navigate the trade-off between cost efficiency and performance in every component of a vehicle. Ignition coils are no exception, with millions produced annually. Even the smallest cost reductions can significantly impact overall expenses. Typically, manufacturers lower costs by using smaller, less powerful neodymium magnets, thinner copper windings, and reduced shielding material.
How are APR Ignition Coils tested?
To ensure each batch of ignition coils meets our rigorous quality standards, we conduct thorough testing on randomly selected samples. The coils undergo testing on our specialized testing stand for 73 hours constituting over 15,768,000 coil firings! All tests are run in an open circuit setup to ensure energy travels through the coil to expose any weakness in the windings and potting material, which would cause the coil to short and overheat. Only after successfully passing our stringent tests are the coil batches approved for sale.
