Norenberg Earns Top-Ten in Qualifying for APR Motorsport’s Home Race

APR’s VW GTI sixth in Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, while R8 penalized after Qualifying Seventh in Rolex Sports Car Series

March 30, 2012 (Birmingham, Ala.) – Looking for a strong start to the weekend in front of its home crowd, APR Motorsport put two of its race cars into the top-10 for Saturday’s Rolex Sports Car Series Porsche 250 as well as the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race at Barber Motorsports Park.

In the distinctive no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am, Dion von Moltke showed the car’s improved form by qualifying in seventh in the Rolex Sports Car Series’ GT-class – missing the pole setting time by a mere 0.4-sec in the car that he will share with Dr. Jim Norman. However, the car did not pass post-race technical inspection when the ride-height bar hit a bolt on the front spitter of the car. As a result, the car will start the race from the back of the GT field.

“I’m a little disappointed for the guys, because I think we had a car to be in the top three,” said von Moltke. “But, we have a good car for the race, and Dr. Jim has been really quick in practice so I am pretty confident for tomorrow. It’s APR’s home race and we want a big result for everyone who is coming out to support us.”

In the CTSCC qualifying session, Nate Norenberg led the way for the team’s contingent of five ST-class Volkswagens, putting the no. 161 APR VW GTI that he shares with Josh Hurley.

“It’s great to get such a strong starting position here at Barber,” said Norenberg. “We we started the weekend with the car in pretty good shape, and Josh (Hurley) got the car where it needed to be. It has a happy tail, and I can wag it just enough. With all the traffic, I knew I had to get a quick lap early. It is nice to be up front where we can hopefully stay away from all of the carnage and get a good result for all of our friends and guests that are here supporting APR.”

In the no. 171 APR VW GTI, David Cheng will start the CTSCC race in 26th position, with Hector Guerrero (no. 181 APR VW Jetta GLI), Daniel LaRiva (no. 191 APR VW Jetta GLI) and Juan Alvarez (no. 131 APR Jetta GLI) close behind. Scheduled to co-drive with Alvarez is Alex Popow, who ordinarily competes in the Rolex Sports Car Series’ Daytona Prototype class and is fresh off a class win at the ALMS’ Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring.

Nelson Canache, driving the no. 41 APR Audi S4 that he shares with Ian Baas, qualified 18th in the GS class for tomorrow’s CTSCC race.

The Porsche 250, the second round of the 2012 Rolex Sports Car Series, will go green on Saturday, March 31 at 12:15 PM and will be broadcast on SPEED Channel on Saturday, March 31 at 4:00 PM ET. The CTSCC race from Barber will go green on Saturday, March 31 at 4:00 PM and will be broadcast on SPEED Channel on Saturday, April 8, at 12:00 PM ET.
