Michael Taylor to become youngest-ever driver in CTSCC, while race-winner Aleks Altberg to partner with Diego Duez in second APR Motorsport VW

January 24, 2013 (Opelika, Ala.) – Looking to continue its race winning tradition in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, APR Motorsport has finalized its driver lineup for this weekend’s BMW Performance 200 at Daytona International Speedway.

In addition to the no. 171 APR VW that will be driven by South African rookie Michael Taylor and GRAND-AM veteran Ian Baas, Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race-winner Aleks Altberg, from Renton, Washington will partner with Diego Duez, from Cuernavaca, Mexico, in the team’s no. 181 APR VW Jetta GLI. Altberg, who will enter his second year in the CTSCC and APR, took his maiden win in 2012 at Elkhart Lake in a nail-biting race that saw him withstand heavy pressure in the final laps as he nursed home a car that was both out of fuel and out of tires. Duez, who has been an VW Motorsports Factory driver in his Mexico for three seasons, drove in 2012 in the VW Polo R Cup in India.

“It’s great to be returning to the CTSCC with APR Motorsport,” said Altberg. “The effort this year is more focused and I’m coming in with more confidence. Last year I think we had the pace to be at the front more often than we were, and now I think I know how to get to the front and stay at the front. I’m really looking forward to working with Diego and with APR again this year.”

Duez is eager to parlay his international experience behind the wheel of VW’s into the CTSCC with APR Motorsport.

“The whole team is working very hard, and I am looking forward to my first race here in Daytona,” said Duez. “The level of competition is very high and the Daytona track is a new experience for me. It’s going to be a very exciting weekend and I am looking forward to racing the APR Jetta GLI on Friday.”

Taylor, who is also a rookie to the CTSCC, will enter Daytona with the benefit of having spent time behind the wheel of the APR VW’s under the guidance of Baas. At sixteen years old, Taylor will become the youngest driver in series history.

“It’s very exciting to be here at Daytona for the first race of the season,” said Taylor. “Ian has helped me to get up to speed and the Jetta GLI was really fun and easy to drive. From what I have seen we will have a very competitive car for the race and my job will be to give it to Ian in good shape and near the front of the field. It’s exciting to be the youngest driver in the history of the CTSCC, but now I’d like to become the youngest winner!”

Since entering the championship in 2009, APR Motorsport has won each season it has competed in the CTSCC. Baas, who has four ST-class wins in the CTSCC with APR Motorsport, will also drive the no. 52 APR Audi R8 GRAND-AM in this weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.

“I’m really excited to be back in ST this season,” said Baas. “With Mikey and our APR VW’s, we have a very fast combination that can win races and contend for the championship. Every year the level of competition in the ST class goes up , and APR has stepped up their game as well. Daytona should be a good track for our cars and I’m really looking forward to the race.”

Team adds Canadian David Empringham to no. 51 APR Audi R8

January 18, 2013 (Opelika, Ala.) – The changes are more than just skin deep for the pair of Audi R8’s that APR Motorsport will field at next weekend’s 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona. After last year, in which APR Motorsport helped to bring the Audi R8 GRAND-AM to it’s first Rolex 24, the team is returning with a pair of Audi R8’s capable of running at the front.

With striking new liveries for both the no. 51 and no. 52 APR Audi R8 GRAND-AM cars, the team is looking to pick up where it left off during the Roar Before the 24. The Roar ended well for the squad from Alabama with the no. 52 APR Audi R8 of Ian Baas, Marc Basseng, Frank Stippler and Rene Rast lapped the track at 1:49.277 – the fastest time of any Audi R8 at the test and the fourth quickest time in the GT class. The team’s sister car, the no. 51 APR Audi R8 of Matt Bell, John Farano, Alex Figge and Dave Lacey, recorded a best time of 1:49.633 – the 14th best time in the strong field of GT cars.

“The Roar Before the 24 was a great way to start off the season,” said Baas, who will compete in his third Rolex 24 at Daytona. “Getting to work with Marc, Frank, and Rene who bring so much experience with the R8s has been a learning experience and to finish the weekend with the fourth best time in GT shows the progress made over the past 12 months with the R8. Just like last year, it’s shaping up to be quite a battle in the GT class and we’re very excited to race at Daytona in our APR R8.”

Bell, who will lead the team’s no. 51 Audi R8, was also enthused after spending his first weekend both with APR Motorsport and in the Audi R8.

“The Audi R8 was really good – obviously, it was very quick, and I felt comfortable in the car right away,” said Bell. “Everyone had the same feedback and we were able to just keep putting laps in and working on long stints and race setup. Based on their reputation, I knew APR was a great organization but there is close-knit, great atmosphere in the team. “

For the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the team will add David Empringham, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada to the no. 51 APR Audi R8. Empringham, a former Daytona Prototype class winner at the Rolex 24, partnered with Farano to win last season’s GS-class championship in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

“I’m really excited to join APR Motorsport for the Rolex 24 at Daytona,” said Empringham. “They are such an impressive organization. I did a few laps in that gorgeous Audi, and I’m impressed at how competitive APR has made this R8. I’m just hoping I can contribute to a successful 24 with John, Matt, Alex and Dave.”

Last year, APR Motorsport helped make Audi history as it was brought the marque to the Rolex 24 at Daytona for the first time. This year, APR Motorsport will be the first team in the 51 year history of the race to field multiple Audi cars in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

“As well as the Roar Before the 24 went, it goes without saying how excited we are for this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona,” said Stephen Hooks, APR Motorsport team owner. “We definitely have the speed to be competitive and the team was able to put a lot of trouble-free miles on the car. Of course, we wanted to be fast and to leave as the quickest Audi is a nice bonus. The GT field looks like it is even more competitive than last year, but we have brought the Audi R8 GRAND-AM a long way.”

Television coverage of the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona will run from 3:00 PM- 11:00 PM ET on SPEED Channel on Saturday, January 26, with the conclusion of the race airing at 9:00 AM – 4 PM ET on SPEED. Matt Bell, John Farano, Alex Figge and Dave Lacey will team up in no. 51 APR Audi R8; Ian Baas will join no. 52 APR Audi R8

January 2, 2013 (Opelika, Ala.) – Not only is APR Motorsport unveiling a new-look testing livery for this weekend’s Roar Before the 24, but the team is proud to announce its driver lineup for the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona. Americans Matt Bell and Alex Figge will join Canadians John Farano and Dave Lacey in the no. 51 APR Audi R8.

Additionally, APR Motorsport driver Ian Baas will compete in the Rolex 24 in the no. 52 APR Audi R8, joining Marc Basseng, Frank Stippler, and Rene Rast.

Competing in his fourth Rolex 24 at Daytona, Matt Bell, from Los Altos, California, will join APR Motorsport for the first time. A veteran in Daytona Prototypes and GT cars, Bell has also scored several wins in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity to race with APR, after racing against them for so many seasons,” said Bell. “My first year in GRAND-AM was also their first year, so since day one they’ve been sort of the enemy. But they wouldn’t be if they weren’t doing things right so you respect them for what they’ve been able to do. I also work for the Audi Sportscar Center at Sonoma Raceway so the combination is pretty cool – and I probably have more miles in an Audi R8 than anyone else on the team, though not in an R8 race car! We have a strong driver lineup – I have competed against Dave this season and I truly trust driving alongside him – and I’m excited to see how our test goes this weekend.”

John Farano, from Toronto, Ontario, is the reigning Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge GS-class champion and Rookie of the Year and will be taking part in his third Rolex 24 at Daytona. Farano’s racing history includes the Grand-Am Ferrari Challenge series, Rolex Daytona Prototypes and GT class, as well as the Canadian Tire NASCAR Series. Farano will be busy during the Rolex 24 weekend, as he will also drive in the Ferrari Challenge races as well as the CTSCC season opener with co-driver David Empringham.

“I am very excited to be driving with APR alongside Alex, Dave, and Matt,” said Farano. “I can’t wait to be on track amongst this strong driver lineup and the rest of the APR team. It is my hope that this will be the beginning of a solid relationship between Tower Events and Grandstand Seating and APR Motorsport that will allow this association to continue to race together for years to come.”

Currently competing in the World Challenge GT class, Alex Figge, from Denver, Colorado, is a veteran of GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, American Le Mans, and ChampCar competition. He has scored numerous podiums and wins in his sports car career, and looks to pick up where he left off after competing in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2008.

“I am extremely excited to be back at the Rolex 24,” said Figge. “I last did the race in 2008 and I’ve been dying to do it again. Obviously in a 24 hour race you’ve got to have reliability and spot-on teamwork. Knowing that, I couldn’t be more positive about being with APR and Audi. I know from reputation and seeing with my own eyes that APR is a first class organization and I can’t wait to get started with them. The test can’t come soon enough.”

Lacey, from Toronto, Ontario, brings 20 seasons of GT-class racing to APR Motorsport. Twice a podium finisher at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Lacey is also an Audi enthusiast – owning both an S5 as well as an R8 V10 – and is understandably excited about the APR relationship.

“I’ve known John Farano as a fellow Canadian and a competitor for a number of years, so I’m thrilled to join APR, Matt, Alex and John in what I think will be a very strong entry for the Rolex 24 at Daytona,” said Lacey. “Clearly APR has learned a great deal about the R8LMS platform over the last season and I believe that the car will be very competitive not only for the 24 Hours, but for the entire season.”

The four drivers will join APR for the first time in this weekend’s Roar Before the 24 at Daytona International Speedway.

As the fourth member of the no. 52 APR Audi R8, Baas, from Indianapolis, Indiana, is thrilled to rejoin APR for the Rolex 24 at Daytona. A former GT-class winner at the race, Baas also drove the no. 51 Audi R8 at both the Rolex 24 and Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen last season.

“Being asked to be a part of the Rolex program is an honor and I’m really excited to drive with Marc, Frank, and Rene,” said Baas. “APR has learned so much in the past year about the R8 and I’m really excited to put all of that experience to use at this year’s Rolex 24. After last year’s two races in the car, I have some unfinished business.”

The Roar Before the 24 begins this Friday, with practice sessions scheduled throughout Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Audi Factory Drivers and APR will Aim for Class Victory

December 19, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – APR Motorsport, the team that introduced the Audi R8 to the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, has raised the bar for this year’s race as it will bring two of Audi’s famous GT racers to January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Piloting the no. 52 APR Audi R8 will be the German lineup of Marc Basseng, Rene Rast, and Frank Stippler. Basseng and Stippler return to APR after driving the no. 52 APR Audi R8 at last season’s Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen, where Stippler piloted the Audi to second in qualifying.

Basseng, from Neusalza, Germany, won the 2007 Rolex 24 at Daytona in the GT class. He has spent the past four seasons competing in the GT1 World Championship, but has class wins in the 12 Hours of Bathurst and the 24 Hours of Nurburgring in an Audi R8 LMS.

Rast, from Minden, Germany, made an impression on the Rolex Series paddock in 2012, taking the winning GT class car to the checkered flag in his first attempt at the race. Three times a Porsche Supercup champion, Rast also has a victory at the 2012 24 Hours of Spa – while driving an Audi R8 LMS – with Stippler. Stippler, from Bad Munstereifel, Germany has been a development driver of the Audi R8 LMS since 2008.

Longtime APR driver Ian Baas, from Indianapolis, Indiana, will be a part of APR’s driver lineup for the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Baas, who will be doing double-duty as he drives with Michael Taylor in the CTSCC, has a GT class win at the Rolex 24 at Daytona on his resume.

A driver announcement for the no. 51 APR Audi R8 will be made in the coming weeks.

APR will also unveil a brand new livery at the Rolex 24 at Daytona that it will use throughout the 2013 season. Both of the Audi R8’s will use an interim testing livery at the Roar Before the 24.

“Last year, when we competed in the Rolex Series for the first time in the 50th Rolex 24 at Daytona, it was a great moment for our organization after several seasons of racing and being competitive in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge,” said Stephen Hooks, owner of APR. “On a personal level, I was extremely proud to watch an APR Audi take the green flag – and the checkered flag – at the Rolex 24. Sixteen-year-old South African Rookie to partner with APR veteran in the famous no. 171

October 26, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – Announcing the driving partnership in one of APR Motorsport’s two ST-class VW’s for the 2013 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, Michael Taylor, from Pretoria, South Africa, will join Ian Baas, from Indianapolis, Indiana, in the no. 171 APR VW.

At sixteen years of age, Taylor has amassed a long driving resume in his native South Africa as well as in Germany. A race winner in South African Formula Vee, he finished runner up in that championship with seven wins. In addition to also driving in German Formula Vee, Taylor has driven in Skip Barber and Formula 2000 machinery stateside.

“I think the racing in GRAND-AM is some of the best in the world, especially in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge,” said Taylor. “I got to meet the team when I came over for holiday and saw the Daytona 24 Hours. Everything just looked so great, the team was very professional, and for me, APR Motorsport is one of the best teams in America. Racing in America has a lot of opportunity, and the chance to race in the ST class with APR was one I didn’t want to pass up.”

With a background primarily in open-wheel cars and karts, the transition to the front-wheel-drive APR VW came easily for Taylor, who sampled the car at APR Motorsport’s recent young driver test at Road Atlanta.

“The APR VW was only the second saloon car I’ve driven, but it was not that difficult to adapt to,” said Taylor. “It was a bit challenging, but very grippy. Everyone on the team really helped me out a lot to adapt. Ian was there and he guided me with some driving and setup tips to help me get on pace. He did a few laps in the car so I knew what I needed to do. I’m really looking forward to racing with him next season.”

A sports car racing veteran, Baas – who has four victories in the CTSCC’s ST-class, all in APR VW’s – will return to the ST class fulltime after driving in the GS class and two Rolex Series races in 2012 in the no. 51 APR Audi R8. A former class winner at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Baas has also done stints in the American Le Mans Series, World Challenge, and Porsche Carrera Cup.

“I’m very excited to be back full time with APR in the ST class,” said Baas. “After having the chance to work with Michael in our test at Road Atlanta, I know we’ll be fighting for wins and hopefully a championship at the end of the year. He got up to speed very quickly and gave good feedback. He’ll be very quick and I’m looking forward to racing with him.”

Since joining the CTSCC in 2008, APR Motorsport has become one of the most competitive programs in the series, winning races in each year it has competed. The team has continued to provide young drivers with their first opportunity to compete in a professional series.

“We always are looking to develop new talent in our CTSCC program and Michael will be a great addition to the APR Motorsport family,” said Jeff Mishtawy, Director Motorsport at APR. “We had the chance to test with him at Road Atlanta and he did a really remarkable job considering he had never been in the car or at the track before. He was fast, but he worked really well with our engineers and with the rest of the team. Michael is a really great kid and his accent makes him fit right in with our engineering staff. We’re excited to pair him with Ian and to go fight for wins in 2013.”

Taylor and Baas will race together for the first time at Grand-Am’s season opening weekend at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida on January 25, 2013.

APR Sponsored Team KPM Racing and Driver James Walker Win Championship for the 2012 Season

Milton Keynes, UK – APR celebrates a successful inaugural season in the VW Racing Cup and congratulates Champion James Walker after a fairly uneventful weekend at Donington Park in the final rounds on Saturday and Sunday where he completed his Championship leading season from Round 1 to finish. The KPM Racing Scirocco saw 11 podiums and 2 race wins this season with Mike Neuhoff driver for KPM Racing ending the season in second place, another VW Cup car infused with APR technology.

Norman and von Moltke Finish Second and Norman is Crowned Rolex Series Rookie of the Year

October 2, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – APR Motorsport, with drivers Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke, capped the first year of competition for the Audi R8 in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series by finishing second in the GT class at the series’ season finale on Saturday at Lime Rock Park. After a challenging season in which the team developed the Audi R8 Grand-Am, it would score its best result in dramatic fashion at the final race of the year.

Norman made up several positions at the start of the race, before handing the car over to von Moltke in 10th position. While battling for position, von Moltke spun exiting turn three with the Audi making contact with two other cars. Luckily, the Audi sustained only cosmetic damage and von Moltke was able to rejoin the race.

With a long green-flag portion through the middle of the race, the APR Motorsport crew made the decision to pit von Moltke for fuel at the earliest moment that would ensure the car would make it to the finish. As a result, von Moltke went down a lap to the leading GT-class Porsche, but was able to get his lap back when the Porsche began saving fuel. A caution period with 25 minutes remaining would see the Audi cycle to third place when several other GT cars pitted under the caution.

Von Moltke took the final green flag in third place with lots of pressure from a chasing Ferrari F458 Italia. When the leading Porsche ran short of fuel with two laps remaining, the Audi was promoted to second place which von Moltke held to the checkered.

It was the first podium for Norman, von Moltke, APR Motorsport and the Audi R8 Grand Am in the Rolex Series.

“Wow! I could not imagine a much better way to have finished off our season,” said von Moltke. “This result was possible thanks to every single person on our team. The guys really dug deep and gave us absolutely flawless pit stops every time, and this was one of the main reasons we finished on the podium. No one got many laps before the race and Jim hopped right into our Audi R8 and was throwing down awesome laps in his stint. He gave me the car in a great position and really helped keep me pushing over the radio throughout my entire stint. Our engineer Mark Scott improved our car each stint and for the final 25 minute sprint to the finish the car was fantastic, and that’s what allowed me to keep pushing and hold off the Ferrari. This has been a very special year for me to work with Jim, APR and Audi, and I am so thankful that I was able to deliver them their first podium finish in the Grand-Am Rolex Series and I hope to help to deliver their first win in the series in the near future!”

For Norman, he not only scored his first Rolex Series podium, but was awarded the Rolex Series Rookie of the Year at the Rolex Series banquet on Monday night in New York City.

“Clinching the Grand-Am Rookie of the Year award is a great honor,” said Norman. “However, this would not have been possible without the tireless support of the APR team that made sure our amazing Audi R8 was safe and fast every single weekend. Short, fast, and Unforgiving Circuit leaves no room for Error at Grand-Am season finale

September 26, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – At 1.5-miles in length, Lime Rock Park – the site of this weekend’s Championship Weekend at Lime Rock Park – is the shortest, tightest track on the GRAND-AM schedule.

With the circuit offering few opportunities to pass, a narrow layout, and one scary-fast, high-speed, downhill corner, spectators will be in for plenty of action as the Daytona Prototypes and GT cars of the Rolex Sports Car Series battle for the final time this season. For the GT cars, simply surviving the two-hour and forty-five minute race without contact will be the key to a strong result.

The race will mark the end of the first season of North American competition for the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am. The car, which debuted at this season’s Rolex 24 at Daytona and has been driven by Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke, has been developed throughout the year and has shown increased pace and competitiveness. With only the race at Lime Rock left, both drivers are looking for a breakthrough performance. Von Moltke knows how to win at Lime Rock, having won last season in the ALMS’ GT-C class.

“With so many championships on the line, ending the season at Lime Rock Park will be a very difficult task,” said von Moltke. “Because Lime Rock is by far the shortest and the tightest race track we race on all year the traffic becomes very difficult to navigate during a race but now with the added pressure of the last race of the year it will be more difficult than ever. For his part, Norman also sees the need to balance his race with keeping an eye out for the Daytona Prototypes who will be lapping the GT field quickly on the short circuit.

Wounded no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am Records Season Best Finish of 9th

August 22, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – It may not have happened in a way the team had hoped, but APR Motorsport recorded their first top-ten of the 2012 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series at the Montreal 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Saturday afternoon.

After starting ninth in the no. 51 APR Motorsport Audi R8 Grand-Am, Dr. Jim Norman survived the always-crazy opening lap at Montreal – albeit with slight contact with a Mazda RX-8 from behind – and settled into a nice rhythm during the opening laps. Battling with the no. 94 Turner Motorsports BMW M3 and the no. 70 Speedsource Mazda RX-8, the BMW ran into the back of Norman under braking for the turn ten hairpin, resulting in damage to the left-rear suspension on the Audi R8.

A resulting caution would see Norman pit and hand the car over to teammate Dion von Moltke.

“We were hoping for a better result this weekend in Montreal,” said Norman. “But the big curbs really rewarded the Camaro, and the long straightaway rewarded several other cars more than ours. Even with the great driving of my teammate Dion, we see that there is still work to do before we get our first podium.”

Once in the car, von Moltke was able to advance the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am a few positions throughout the race. Taking over the car in 12th position, he would finish in ninth, chasing down the Mazda RX-8 ahead of him in the closing stages of the two-hour race.

“It was a really tough race as Montreal is a very mentally demanding race track,” said von Moltke. “You really have no room for error and for the last 45 minutes I was pushing like it was qualifying to close the gap to the Mazda in front of us. I was able to get right on his rear bumper on the final lap but I just used up the tires too much trying to get there that I had nothing left to really challenge him through the final few corners. Once again our guys were awesome in the pits which really allowed us to finally crack the top-ten.”

Despite the incident, the APR Motorsport drivers left Montreal in high spirits with the team’s first top-ten in the Rolex Series.

“We have made tremendous progress this year developing the Audi so it is competitive under the Grand Am rules package,” said Norman. “The team has been working very hard to find every possible way to make the car handle better and thus move up the time sheets. We are back to work and expect an even better result at Laguna!”

Von Moltke echoed the thoughts of his teammate.

“As a team we are finally hitting our stride and working together great,” he said. “The last two races Jim has really elevated his game and is really preforming well, I think we are starting to get the best out of the car as drivers and as a team. We are looking forward to Laguna Seca!”

It will also give APR Motorsport’s Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke a chance to finish what they started last week in Watkins Glen.

This weekend’s Montreal 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is the tenth of twelve rounds in the 2012 Rolex Series, and sees the APR Motorsport team enter the weekend with lots of momentum from last weekend’s Continental Tire 200 at Watkins Glen International Speedway. With less than 30 minutes remaining at Watkins Glen, the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am was in sixth position – with von Moltke at the wheel after a strong opening stint by Norman – but was sidelined with a mechanical failure.

Site of the Canadian Grand Prix since 1978, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a favorite of most drivers. Featuring several long straightaways, low-speed and technical corners, and surrounded by barriers – including the world-famous Wall of Champions – it will present a challenge for both von Moltke and Norman, as well as the engineering staff of APR Motorsport.

Von Moltke, who previously raced at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in a Daytona Prototype, is looking forward to racing the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am in front of the Canadian fans.

Strongest Performance to Date for APR Audi R8 Grand-Am, Dr. Jim Norman, and Dion von Moltke Goes Unrewarded

August 14, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – The day had gone to plan for the APR Motorsport team at the Continental Tire 200 on the short course at Watkins Glen International. After a strong opening stint for Dr. Jim Norman, who started 11th and ran as high as fourth, his teammate Dion von Moltke had the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am in sixth position with thirty minutes remaining in the two-hour race.

Good on fuel and running a strong pace, von Moltke would be forced to bring the Audi behind the wall and into retirement when the left-rear wheel bearing failed on the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am. This was the same failure that befell the car during the Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen in July.

While the team was ultimately robbed of a top-10, both the APR Motorsport drivers left excited with the pace that the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am showed on the weekend. Avoiding trouble – and the Daytona Prototypes determined to run them off the road – Norman and von Moltke nearly scored the APR Motorsport’s best result since stepping into the Rolex Series at the beginning of the year.

“We are getting so close to having an extremely good result in our APR Audi R8 and I really thought it was coming this weekend,” said von Moltke. “Jim put in an outstanding stint and really drove great all weekend – he battled with some of the top sports car drivers in the U.S. and gave me the car in a great position. Norman had turned over the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am to von Moltke from fifth position, having advanced six positions from his qualifying position of eleventh. It was Norman’s strongest performance thus far in the Rolex Series, and despite the disappointment of not finishing, left him excited for the races remaining in the season.

After Setbacks at the Six-Hour, Team Is Looking For a Better Result

August 10, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – Watkins Glen was not very kind to APR Motorsport the last time the team from Opelika, Ala., was there.

Competing with two cars in the Rolex Series for the first time, both the no. 51 and no. 52 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am’s ran within the top-10 during the opening hour of the race before being slowed by similar suspension problems that sent both cars behind the pit wall for repairs. After the high of seeing the no. 52 car qualify on the front row, and having both cars run in the top-10 during the first hour, both the APR Audi R8’s encountered suspension problems and finished well down the order in the Rolex Series GT class.

With those memories, drivers Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke are looking to put things right this weekend. Having had a strong run at the Brickyard Grand Prix curtailed by an incident with a GT-class Mazda, both drivers are hoping for a breakthrough performance on the short course at Watkins Glen.

Although the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am was several laps down by the time Norman got behind the wheel during the Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen, he threw down several fast laps towards the end of his stint as the checkered came near. Putting an exclamation point on his drive, he would set his fastest lap of the race on his final lap as he took the checkered flag.

Ian Baas Lands on Touring Car Podium With Last Lap Heroics at Cadillac Grand Prix Presented by Stoptech

August 7, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – APR Motorsport’s Ian Baas survived heavy rain, a drive-through penalty, and wayward GT cars in the Pirelli World Challenge Championships’ Cadillac Grand Prix Presented by Stoptech at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course to claim a podium spot on Sunday, in the second of two Pirelli World Challenge races, in his no. 49 APR VW GTI.

In Saturday’s race, the team elected to put Baas’ no. 49 APR VW GTI on a very aggressive boost map, while taking a more conservative approach with teammate Alex Popow’s no. 94 APR VW GTI. Baas drove to third in that race – miles behind a similar VW Jetta GLI – before his car was found to have exceeded the World Challenge boost limit, and was removed from the results. Not surprisingly, the VW Jetta that originally won the race was also disqualified. Popow, who struggled with a transmission issue in the second half of the race, would end up in fourth position and set the race’s fastest lap in Touring Car – and the fastest of any VW.

The team was thrown another curve ball when Popow needed to leave the event quickly on Sunday morning, leaving APR Motorsport in need of a driver. The team found a guy named Robb Holland, who met APR Motorsport’s driver criteria (he had a helmet and experience in VW’s) and put him into the no. 94 APR VW GTI. With the driver substitution, APR Motorsport’s two VW’s would make up the last row of the fifty-four car field, which would take the green flag in rainy conditions.

Baas and Holland made great starts around the 2.2-mile circuit, passing several of their Touring Car competitors and all of the GTS-class Ford Mustangs on the opening lap before a full-course caution forced them to circle behind the pace car for nine laps. Once underway again, the two APR Motorsport VW GTI’s raced forward to the top-five in Touring Car until Baas was forced to serve a penalty for avoidable contact. After a drive-through, Baas raced forward again, catching a battle on the final lap between the third and fourth-placed cars in Touring Car who were doing battle with a GT car. When the three tripped up on each other, Baas was able to capitalize and put the no. 49 APR VW GTI on the podium.

“What a crazy couple of days,” said Baas. “We knew we were going to be right on the edge with our boost on Saturday, and yet there was no way we could keep up with that VW Jetta in a straight line. Imagine my surprise when they were DQ’d! Sunday’s race was going to be wild with all the rain. I really don’t think I deserved that avoidable contact penalty – I was pretty upset about it – so I just put my head down and drove as hard as I could. Luckily we got some breaks in traffic and things kind of fell into place on the last lap with a GT car getting mixed up with the other Touring Cars. I’m glad we were able to get on the podium and keep it on Sunday. The car was great on both days, in the dry and in the rain – another solid weekend by the APR Motorsport guys.”

“I was really disappointed to leave Mid-Ohio because I was really looking forward to the second race,” said Popow. “The car was very fast but when the transmission started to go away I really started to struggle. Obviously, the crew fixed it and it was very fast because it was in third spot for most of the race on Sunday. Hopefully I can drive with APR Motorsport in some more World Challenge races in the future.”

Holland, a former Touring Car race winner, would finish in sixth – a strong result considering his only experience in the no. 94 APR VW GTI was checking to make sure the radio worked before driving to the grid. Holland ran in the third spot throughout most of the race until his rain tires fell off in the final laps. It ended up being a valuable experience for Holland, who will travel to England this weekend to become the first American in 37 years to compete in a British Touring Car Championship race.

“I wasn’t in a big hurry to get to the track, because I didn’t have anything planned in the morning,” said Holland. “Then Jeff (Misthawy, Director of Competition for APR Motorsport) found me. I thought he didn’t like me. Next thing I knew I was on track, in the rain, in a car I had never driven before, and Jeff told me to bring it back without a scratch because it has to race again in a few weeks. Unbelievable! But, at least he did a great job on the radio feeding information to me. I was able to feel out the car a bit on the warm-up lap, but the conditions were changing so it required a real soft touch on the first few laps. I got a real good start and made up some positions right away but I was always looking around – with the rain there is always potential for carnage and I wanted to avoid it. We ran in third for most of the race but the tires fell off a bit in the final laps. But it was fun and Jeff wasn’t too upset with how the car looked after the race, and it was actually a great warm up for Snetterton.”

Team is set for Season Debut in SCCA World Challenge with Ian Baas and Alex Popow

August 1, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) Somehow, APR Motorsport managed to survive the madness of the Grand-Am Brickyard Sports Car Challenge over the weekend with two whole cars from the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge intact. So the team is doing the logical thing – taking them to compete in this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge Championships double-header at the Mid-Ohio sports car course.

APR Motorsport will enter two VW’s in the Touring Class at this weekend’s Cadillac Mid-Ohio Grand Prix presented by Stoptech. The team last competed in the Pirelli World Challenge at last season’s series finale at Road Atlanta where Josh Hurley finished second in Touring Car. But to race this weekend they will need a pair of drivers, and the team has secured the services of the two best drivers that weren’t doing anything else.

Finding the best Mexican they could, the team will have Alex Popow drive the no. 94 APR VW GTI this weekend. This will be Popow’s first Pirelli World Challenge start. Popow finished second overall at this year’s 24 Hours of Daytona, and was a class winner at the 12 Hours of Sebring. He currently leads the American Le Mans Series LMPC class championship, and last weekend co-drove to victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the Daytona Prototype class.

“I’m not Mexican, I’m from Venezuela,” said Popow. “It’s a completely different country. It’s not even on the same continent. There’s a giant Venezuela sticker on the car! But whatever, I’m excited to drive with APR Motorsport at Mid-Ohio. I have driven with them for a few events in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge and this new challenge in World Challenge has me really excited. It has been a few seasons since I’ve done a sprint race and a standing start so this should be a lot of fun.”

Going European for their second driver, the team has selected redhead Ian Baas, from Ireland (probably) to drive the no. 49 APR VW GTI. Baas has several previous starts in World Challenge competition, where he raced throughout the 2006 and 2007 seasons in a Audi A4 in the Touring Class. Baas has also scored several victories in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge – as well as a class win at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

“Actually, I was born in Indianapolis, and I’ve lived here my whole life,” said Baas. “But my ancestry is German, Dutch, and Irish, so you were close. And my last name means ‘Boss’. No matter, we are really excited to get back into World Challenge after we did a couple of races last season. Sprint races are really fun and with the mixed classes in World Challenge, it’s a real challenge for the drivers in the Touring Class. Our APR VW will be up to the challenge.”

The one-week turnaround between Indianapolis and Mid-Ohio presents a challenge for the team, but APR Motorsport’s Director of Motorsport, Jeff Mishtawy, is anxious to see the team’s VW’s in action in the Pirelli World Challenge.

Six APR Motorsport Cars Compete at Legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Team Nets Top-10 in Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race

August 1, 2012 (Indianapolis, Ind.) – The first GRAND-AM event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was one of the wildest days on record in both the Rolex Sports Car Series as well as the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

Both races were affected heavily by rain, meaning APR Motorsport would have to deal with the elements – as well as other cars – throughout the day.

Starting from fifth for the first Rolex Series Brickyard Grand Prix, Dion von Moltke – who celebrated his twenty-second birthday on race day – drove the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am throughout the changeable conditions of the first half of the three-hour race. Running in the top-ten throughout his stint, von Moltke was punted into the gravel trap just past the halfway point of the race, with significant damage to the left rear of the Audi R8.

“We had such a good car today, it ran really well in the opening stages,” said von Moltke. “Having contact with another car and getting put into the gravel is really disappointing. I think on pace, this was our best race so far. The conditions were really tough with the drying track but we were in good shape. I hate it for the guys, but they were total heroes to get the car fixed.”

The team made repairs to the car and sent Dr. Jim Norman out to finish the race, with him and von Moltke being credited with 18th in the GT class when the checkered fell.

“We had a bit of an incident, unfortunately, which I thought was going to put us out of the race,” said Norman. “We had really good pace, Dion was reporting that the car was really good, and our strategy was playing out well. I was set to get in the car and do my stint, and I thought when we were hit it was all over. But the guys worked really hard to get the car back out and I was able to take the checkered flag at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was a good feeling and the car was perfect when I was out there.”

The two hour and thirty minute Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race threw a major curveball at the teams as it had a red flag period. When the rain began to fall during a full course caution, APR Motorsport brought its cars in to switch from dry slick tires to rain tires. Shortly after, however, the race went under red flag for too much standing water on the circuit.

With several laps of running under caution before the race went green again, the team was forced to bring all the cars back in for dry tires. David Cheng and Aleks Altberg would end up as the best finishers, piloting the no. 171 APR VW GTI to an eighth place finish in the ST class, with Daniel La Riva and Christian Perez 18th in the no. 191 APR VW Jetta GLI.

“Things just didn’t work out for us with the way that the red flag and green flag ended up falling,” said Altberg. “I think we made the right choice to come in for rain tires, I was having a hard time keeping the car on track under yellow. But the track dried out really fast and then Grand-Am had us do all those laps under caution, and we had do an extra pit stop. I think we were in great shape for a top-five, but under the circumstances, we are happy with a top-ten. And to have the chance to race at Indy was surreal. It was a great experience no matter the finish.”

Unfortunately for teammates Nate Norenberg and Josh Hurley, their no. 161 APR VW GTI retired from the race in the first hour with a transmission failure, while Juan Alvarez and Juan Pablo Sierra’s no. 131 APR VW Jetta GLI retired after overheating due to a punctured radiator. The no. 41 APR Audi S4 of Hector Guerrero and Alex Popow also retired with a mechanical problem.

The Brickyard Sports Car Challenge will be broadcast on Sunday, August 5, at 12:00 PM ET on SPEED Channel. The next round of the Rolex Sports Car Series will be August 10-11 on the short course at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, N.Y. The next round of the CTSCC will be on September 7-8 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Salinas, Calif.

After Attending Waterfest, Team Travels with Six Cars to the Brickyard

July 25, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – It will be a quick, one-day, in-and-out event for APR Motorsport as the team travels to Indianapolis, Indiana for the historic first sports car race in the history of Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Part of the Super Weekend, this Friday will see Grand-Am’s Rolex Sports Car Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge take part in a one-day event at the world famous Brickyard. With a total of six cars competing, it will be a very busy day for the team.

Fielding two cars for the first time in the Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen, the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am will be back at the hands of regular drivers Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke, who took part in a recent tire test at the Speedway. After a practice accident at Watkins Glen left the car starting last on the field, it advanced as high as tenth before losing several laps with a mechanical issue. After a frustrating result, the team is anxious to get back on track at the Brickyard.

“Finally, the Indianapolis race day is almost here!” said von Moltke. “The track has two different surfaces – going from high grip on the oval to low-grip in the infield. This presents a really tough challenge for the drivers and engineers to find the right compromise on a setup to get the best overall car throughout the lap. The guys at APR Motorsport have tried to learn as much as possible throughout the last few weeks and we hope to show up with the right compromise. It is even more vital than ever to have a good setup right away as we will only have one one-hour session to really learn the track!”

APR Motorsport’s CTSCC team will be looking for their second victory of the season. Aleks Altberg and David Cheng, in the no. 171 APR VW GTI, scored the first CTSCC victory of their careers at Road America. Their teammates, Nate Norenberg and Josh Hurley, in the no. 161 APR VW GTI, have enjoyed several strong runs this season but have also had plenty of bad luck working against them.

APR’s ‘Juan’ car, the no. 131 APR VW Jetta GLI of Juan Carlos Alvarez and Juan Pablo Sierra, is back after missing the previous race at Watkins Glen. Also rejoining the team after missing Watkins Glen is the no. 191 APR VW Jetta GLI of Daniel LaRiva and Christian Perez. Hector Guerrero and Alex Popow will team up again in the no. 41 APR Audi S4, which will race in the CTSCC’s GS class.

While the team has been busy preparing for the Super Weekend, they’ve had other events to keep busy with. This past weekend, APR Motorsport attended Waterfest, the largest VW/Audi car show and Motorsport event in North America, at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey.

Over 20,0000 attendees had the opportunity to see the no. 51 and no. 52 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am, the no. 41 APR Audi S4, and the team’s ST-class Volkswagen GTI’s and Jetta GLI’s, on display. Both APR Audi R8’s Slowed With Mechanical Problems in Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen

July 6, 2012 (Watkins Glen, N.Y.) — A promising start to the Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen unraveled for the pair of APR Audi R8 Grand-Am’s. But for a while, they sure looked cool racing around the 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International Circuit together.

Bookending the field, the no. 52 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am of Frank Stippler and Marc Basseng started the race from second position. After an incident during practice, the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am was unable to take part in qualifying, so the car driven by Ian Baas, Dr. Jim Norman, and Dion von Moltke would start last on the grid.

The opening stint saw Stippler fall to fourth but able to run with the leaders, while Baas was able to make steady progress through the field. After the first round of pitstops, the no. 51 APR Audi R8 would come out ahead of the no. 52 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am, with Basseng now at the wheel. Baas ran as high as eighth before a failed wheel bearing slowed the car and ultimately sent it back to the trailer for repairs.

The sister car would not escape problems either, as in the fourth hour, Stippler was forced to bring the no. 52 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am back to the trailer for repairs – as it turned out, the same wheel bearing had failed on that car.

Out of contention, the no. 52 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am would take the checkered flag in 12th position, while the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am finished in 18th. The car was driven to the checkered by Norman, who gave his team a reason to celebrate when he ran his two fastest times of the race on his final two laps.

“It was a blast at the end of my stint,” said Norman. “The crew worked their butts off all weekend, but because they had to work on the car so much, I had very few laps in the car before the race started. So I spent my stint learning the car, getting faster, faster, faster, and I was pretty happy by the end of the stint. There is definitely more there. Working with Audi this weekend has been very educational. As a driver, I learned a lot working with Ian and Dion this weekend, they are both great teachers.”

Baas, who made steady progress through the field during the opening hour, was enthused about the progress the team made on the Audi R8 Grand-Am.

“Considering the trials that the team went through, the car was really good for the start of the race,” said Baas. “I think we started the race the best we could have, and we were looking like a top-ten for us. We have a lot of new info, but certainly we’ve found some things on both cars that we need to address.”

Von Moltke was scheduled to get into the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am when Baas encountered his problems. After repairs were made and three trouble-free stints, von Moltke handed off a strong car to Norman.
“Unfortunately we had another weekend where the result doesn’t show just how hard the whole team worked,” said von Moltke. “We learned a lot working with the Audi Sport guys, with Frank and Marc, and we definitely made progress on the car. It wasn’t as much as we would like, but it’s a step in the right direction. Thanks to our crew, they made the car perfect every time we had some damage. The car was pretty good when I got into it and I know we made a lot of progress working with the Audi Sport guys this weekend. I’m looking forward to putting that into use at Indy.”

Joining APR Motorsport for the first time, and with the coolest hometown of all time, Frank Stippler, from Bad Munstereifel, Germany, found the Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen a challenge.

“APR Motorsport is a very nice team and Watkins Glen is a very nice track,” said Stippler. “The car was consistent and fine. I think we got the most out of it, but the Audi R8 Grand-Am still has a big disadvantage in traffic. If we have clean air, the car is good, but it is difficult to overtake other cars like this. I enjoyed the weekend and I like the American way of racing. It was a very nice experience.”

After a stretch of four races in five weeks, the APR Motorsport team will enjoy a short break before competing in the inaugural Brickyard Grand Prix, on July 27, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Team brings Two Audi R8’s and Last Week’s CTSCC Winner to Watkins Glen

June 30, 2012 (Watkins Glen, N.Y.) – In another wild Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race, APR Motorsport showed its strength in the ST class again by running with both of its APR VW GTI’s in the top-ten in the late stages of the race. When the checkered flag fell, however, it would only be the no. 161 APR VW GTI of Nate Norenberg and Josh Hurley that would crack the top-ten, as Hurley guided the car to a ninth place finish.

After a strong opening stint by Norenberg, Hurley would survive a hectic late-race battle – as well as several restarts following full-course cautions – to finish ninth. The rear bumper, which hung on for dear life in the final stages of the race, was proof of the physical nature of the race.

“Ninth is a decent result – we would rather win than be ninth, but we are pretty happy with how the race went,” said Hurley. “It was pretty warm today and I think that hurt our car over the course of the race, so we were kind of hanging on a bit at the end. Nate did a great job to get things started and after the way our race ended last week, it’s nice to get a finish.”

Troubles started early for the no. 171 APR VW GTI, which won last week’s race at Road America. During the warm-up lap, Cheng reported a loss of power that forced him to come to pit lane before the green flag. The APR Motorsport crew was able to make repairs and send Cheng back out without losing a lap to the ST field. Cheng was able to stay on the lead lap until a full course caution period allowed the team to stop for a full service and put co-driver Aleks Altberg in the car.

With good work in the pits and a strong stint by Altberg, the car gained positions and ran as high as sixth before problems surfaced again, halting the car on track during a full course caution. The car would refire, but Altberg had lost most of his track position, and the car would ultimately finish in 21st.

“The car was working really well, and we were really happy about how the race was going,” said Cheng. “And then we had some kind of electronic glitch under yellow. It’s really unfortunate, because the team had worked a minor miracle to fix the car earlier in the race to keep us on the lead lap, and Aleks did a great job once we did our driver change. The yellows helped us and we were good on tires and fuel, but then the car shut off. After the high of last week, this is a real low. I’m not sure what else we could do, but we’ll move on to Indy and hope for another good run there.”

The next race for the CTSCC is a historic first event – the Brickyard Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, on July 27. That race, on a Friday, will be shown live on SPEED2.com.

The German from Bad Munstereifel Qualifies Second in First GRAND-AM Appearance

June 30, 2012 (Watkins Glen, N.Y.) – Proving a quick study to the challenges of the Watkins Glen International circuit, Frank Stippler drove the no. 52 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am to second in the fifteen-minute qualifying session for Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen.

Stippler’s time of 1:51.018 was set on his first flying lap and would hold up throughout the rest of the session. Stippler will share the car with fellow German Marc Basseng in the six-hour race.

“It would have been a dream to qualify the Audi R8 on pole for my first Grand-Am race,” said Stippler. “But the Camaro did a really good time. I had a faster lap going but then a Mazda had spun and that lap was destroyed, and then I didn’t have the opportunity to go for another one. We have been working hard with APR Motorsport and Audi Sport to improve the car. I think tomorrow we’ll have a strong race with me and Marc and we’ll try to improve our position by one!”

The team’s no. 51 APR Audi R8, which will be driven by Dr. Jim Norman, Dion von Moltke, and Ian Baas suffered a mechanical failure during the third practice, making contact with the tire wall in the ‘Laces’ section of Watkins Glen. Ian Baas was at the wheel at the time, with the damage causing the car to miss the qualifying session. The team was expecting a strong qualifying performance from the no. 51 car as well.

“We’ve been making improvements to the car all weekend, and I had just run my best lap of the weekend when we went into the wall,” said Baas, who finished second in the 2006 Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen. “I hate it for the guys who have to repair the car, but hopefully we can repay them with a strong run tomorrow. The team has made big improvements to the Audi R8 all season, and it’s definitely a better can than it was in Daytona. I think we’ll have a great car for the six hour race tomorrow.”

The challenge of running two cars in the Rolex Series for the first time is paying off for APR Motorsport, according to team owner Stephen Hooks. APR Motorsport has also entered three cars in this weekend’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race.

“Our primary goal for bringing in the second car, Audi Sport, and Marc and Frank, was to put everything on the table to see what kind of result we could get,” said Stephen Hooks. “Having the Audi Sport guys with us this weekend has been a real learning experience, and it’s given us a great chance to go in two different directions with setup, and we’ve learned a lot this week. It was disappointing to have the no. 51 miss qualifying because we expected that car to be very fast in qualifying, but we have high hopes for their performance tomorrow. Dion and Jim have had some momentum over the past few races and hopefully that carries over to tomorrow.”

Team brings Two Audi R8’s and Last Week’s CTSCC Winner to Watkins Glen

June 28, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – Spirits are high in the APR Motorsport camp, as after one of it’s strongest weekends of the year at Road America, the team heads to a track which has seen some its strongest success in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

At last Saturday’s Rolex 250 driven by VisitFlorida.com, the no. 51 APR Audi R8 recovered from early contact to lead the Rolex Series’ GT class in the late stages before a cut tire sent the team back to the pits for an unscheduled pit stop. Despite the setback, the team was buoyed by the pace of the car and is looking forward to a similar performance this weekend on the long straightaway’s and fast corners of Watkins Glen International.

APR Motorsport will run two cars in the Rolex Series for the first time at this weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen, with the no. 52 APR Audi R8 for German drivers Marc Basseng and Frank Stippler joining the team on this weekend. Former Rolex 24 at Daytona winner Ian Baas will also join the lineup of the no. 51 APR Audi R8. Baas finished second in the GT class at the 2006 running of the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen.

David Cheng and Aleks Altberg scored APR Motorsport’s first CTSCC win of the 2012 season at Road America, taking the no. 171 APR VW GTI to victory lane after running at the front of the field throughout the race. It was the first victory for rookies Cheng and Altberg, and extended APR Motorsport’s winning streak in the ST class back to 2009.

At last year’s Continental Tire 150, APR Motorsport’s VW’s came from the last row to finish first and second – something that hadn’t been done before in the CTSCC. APR Motorsport’s first win in the CTSCC came at Watkins Glen in 2009, and has scored four of the race’s fastest laps over the previous five races at the Glen.

“A week later, we almost can’t believe that we won at Road America,” said Altberg, who took the checkered flag in the no. 171 APR VW GTI. “The ST field is so stacked with good drivers and cars, we know that getting our first win of the season was really tough, and a second will be just as difficult. But we definitely feel more confident now and we expect the VW’s to perform well here, so we’ll just stick to our game plan and we know that the APR Motorsport guys will give us another good car.”

The wild race at Road America took its toll on the APR Motorsport team, as both its no. 131 and no 191 APR Jetta GLI’s will miss Watkins Glen for repairs. The no. 161 APR GTI of Nate Norenberg and Josh Hurley was also damaged in the race but will make the grid this weekend, as will the no. 41 APR Audi S4 of Hector Guerrero and Alex Popow.

Strong run for Audi R8 Ends With a cut Tire in the Race’s Closing Stages

June 27, 2012 (Elkhart Lake, Wis.) – For the second time this season, the no. 51 APR Audi R8 showed the speed to lead the GT field of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series. The run, however, would be derailed when a cut tire in the late stages of the race brought the car to the pits for an extra pit stop.

With qualifying rained out, the field was formed based on the championship standings, with Dr. Jim Norman starting the race in 11th. Despite contact in the early stages of the race, the car suffered little damage and Dion von Moltke was able to take over the car without issue under an early caution.

Pit strategy enabled von Moltke to gain track position, driving up to second place before the team’s second pitstop. After the stop, von Moltke was able to drive up to the front and lead the race for a brief period, before having to stop for his final stop for fuel. After that stop, however, von Moltke would suffer a cut tire and have to slowly return to the pits, losing a lap. He would ultimately finish the race in 13th.

“This was a challenging weekend for sure, with qualifying being rained out and the contact at the start of the race,” said Norman. “We had contact going into the Hurry Downs, I was trying to make up positions because we were being held up by a slower car. Luckily, the Audi is a strong car and it wasn’t damaged. Despite all that, we had a good run going and it was fun to see the Audi lead laps again.”

Von Moltke was looking forward to scoring the team’s best result of the year when he had a scary moment when the rear tire suddenly deflated as he was headed down the back straightaway – flat out in sixth gear – towards Canada Corner.

“I may or may not need a change of shorts after that,” said von Moltke. “That was scary and completely unexpected. It’s too bad, because things were going really well, and I was really excited because I thought we had a car that would have dug deep into the top-five – maybe even gotten a podium. But we were fast and led again, and that’s a big boost for the team. We just need luck to go a little bit our way. I think we’ll have something for the GT field next weekend at Watkins Glen.”

At next weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen, Norman and von Moltke will be joined by Ian Baas in the no. 51 APR Audi R8. The team will also field the no. 52 APR Audi R8 for German drivers Marc Basseng and Frank Stippler.

Team’s APR VW GTI’s Take Turns Leading at Elkhart Lake

June 23, 2012 (Elkhart Lake, Wis.) – Rookies David Cheng and Aleks Altberg took the first Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge win of their careers – and the first of the year for APR Motorsport – in the twilight of Friday night at the demanding Road America circuit.

The win stretched APR Motorsport’s winning record in the CTSCC’s ST class to four straight seasons, and also scored a win for the no. 171 APR VW GTI – one of the original Mk.5 GTI’s built by the team when it joined the series in 2008.

From his sixth starting position, Nate Norenberg drove the no. 161 APR VW GTI to the front of the field, taking the lead at the end of the first hour. When Norenberg pitted to hand over to teammate Josh Hurley, the no. 171 APR VW GTI took over the lead of the ST race. Running consistent laps throughout the middle part of the race, Altberg ran in the top three until the final hour of the race. When the race went green after the race’s fifth caution, Altberg was in second but drove his VW to the lead with a little over 40 minutes remaining.

The race for Hurley, who had raced up to tenth, ended with 20 minutes remaining when he was caught up in a massive, multiple-car incident. His APR VW GTI was too damaged to continue.

However, that caution set up a late-race dash to the checkered. Altberg pulled away from the field and held on for a narrow victory.

“My whole plan was to take it easy on the car and give it to Aleks in a good position with lots of brakes left,” said Cheng. “I let a couple of guys go who were being really aggressive because I didn’t want to use up the car. Once I got out of the car and Aleks got it, it was an extremely nerve-racking race for me. We needed a certain amount of yellow and we got it, and it is so great to get our first win and the first win of the year for the team. We’ve had a lot of bad luck and I think all the guys needed a good result, and I’m glad that we could deliver it to them.”

For Altberg, who led eighteen laps, the victory was a strong turnaround in form after a rough start to the season – especially after an early season crash at Barber that destroyed the first no. 171 APR VW GTI to see action this year.

“I think I was biting my fingernails off inside the car,” said Altberg. “I saved the car for the end of the race to make sure we had plenty of tires and brakes left. We got enough yellows and on the last couple of restarts, I was able to get a good restart and get a gap. I don’t know what would have happened if there had been another lap, the Honda was coming! But I’m so happy to get our win, it hasn’t sunk in yet but this definitely gives us more confidence for the rest of the season.”

The no. 131 APR VW Jetta GLI of Juan Alvarez and Juan Pablo Sierra had a strong run curtailed when Sierra made contact with the wall with just under an hour left. Sierra had been running in 15th position when he went off.

June 21, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – Bolstering it’s entry for the upcoming Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen, APR Motorsport has announced that the team will field a second Audi R8 GRAND-AM for the annual six-hour classic.

The no. 52 APR Audi R8 GRAND-AM will join the team’s stable, with drivers Marc Basseng and Frank Stippler piloting the car. Stippler, from Bad Munstereifel, Germany, drove the Audi Sport Test Car – dubbed the ‘Captain America’ car – during the Roar Before the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway. Stippler has been a Factory Development Driver for the Audi R8 LMS since 2008.

“For me, this will be a weekend full of premieres,” said Stippler. “For the first time, I will be a part of APR Motorsport. For the first time, I will race the Audi R8 GRAND-AM. And, I will get my first taste of Watkins Glen. As I am a traditionalist, I love old-style tracks. I am excited to get to know this circuit which even used to be an F1 venue in the past. There are drivers who use a simulator to adapt to new tracks. I prefer to arrive a bit sooner, walk over the track and learn everything by heart. After having been involved in the development process of the R8 GRAND-AM, it is great to race it now. GRAND-AM is pretty new to me as well. I have tackled the 2008 Rolex 24 at Daytona, but apart from that race, I don’t know the series. I think we can expect a high class starting grid and an exciting race.”

Basseng, from Neusalza, Germany, has spent the last three seasons competing in the competitive GT1 World Championship, in which he scored three wins in 2011 driving a Lamborghini. Last season, behind the wheel of an Audi R8 LMS, he drove to victory in the 12 Hours of Bathurst and to a class win in the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. Basseng has one win in the 2007 Rolex 24 at Daytona in the GT class.

The circuit is embedded perfectly into the surroundings. In the very first part, there is a fast right-left-right corner that is really exciting. All in all, it is a very demanding track. I am sure we will enjoy an entertaining weekend.”

In addition, former Rolex 24 at Daytona winner Ian Baas will join Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke in the team’s no. 51 APR Audi R8. Baas drove the same car at this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, joining Norman, von Moltke, and five-time winner of the 24 Hours of LeMans, Emmanuelle Pirro.

The event will also mark the first time that the team campaigns two cars in the Rolex Series’ GT class. The team has campaigned a multi-car effort in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series since 2007, and currently races five cars in the series.

June 20, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – Road America is one of the most famous circuits in North America, and for good reason. At over 4 miles in length, it features several long straightaways linked by extremely fast and challenging corners. Its ‘Kink’ is flat out in most cars and scary in all of them – but it’s a playground that the drivers of APR Motorsport are really looking forward to.

After a challenging Mid-Ohio weekend, where the team’s no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am was caught a lap down when a yellow flag came out, drivers Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke are looking to repeat their form from Belle Isle, where the car qualified 4th and led it’s first laps in Grand-Am.

The team’s CTSCC program heads to Road America after enjoying its best result of the season, when Nate Norenberg and Josh Hurley drove to sixth two weeks ago at Mid-Ohio in the no. 161 APR VW GTI.

Showing strong form in qualifying at Mid-Ohio was the no. 171 APR VW GTI of Aleks Altberg and David Cheng, who qualified sixth. They encountered troubles later in the race, and would finish in 22nd, just behind teammates Daniel LaRiva and Christian Perez, who were 20th, in the no. 191 APR VW Jetta GLI, and Juan Alvarez and Juan Pablo Sierra, who were 21st, in the no. 131 APR VW Jetta GLI.

“It was a great thing to have one of our cars start and another finish in the top-10 at Mid-Ohio,” said Hurley. “We’ve had several strong runs all season that just didn’t end up in a good result, for one reason or another. Hopefully we’ve started to turn the corner and we can keep that momentum going this weekend at Road America.”

Also returning will be the no. 41 APR Audi S4, driven by Hector Guerrero and Alex Popow. The duo was scheduled to make their debut at Mid-Ohio before the car was withdrawn after a crash in practice when Guerrero hit oil entering the Keyhole.

Duo of Norenberg and Hurley Score Team’s Best Result By Finishing Sixth

June 13, 2012 (Lexington, Ohio) – The APR Motorsport team entered Saturday with high hopes for both its Rolex Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge teams. For the Rolex Series team, with the Audi R8 Grand-Am driven by Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke, the hunt was for the team’s first top-10 of the season. After qualifying 11th, Norman would start the car in Saturday’s two hour and forty-five minute race.

Norman’s stint was mostly trouble-free, and he was able to turn over the car in great shape to Dion von Moltke. However, the team encountered bad timing when, shortly after completing their first pitstop, a full course caution came out with Dion von Moltke trapped behind the leading Daytona Prototype car. While von Moltke would be given a wave-by, he was nearly 30 seconds behind the GT field when the race returned to green flag.

A late race caution gave von Moltke the opportunity to close the gap to the GT field, but he was unable to take advantage of a wave-by. Von Moltke would take the checkered flag in 13th position.

“Once again, APR Motorsport gave Jim and me a great car,” said von Moltke. “We had great race pace throughout the entire event but things just did not fall our way, so we could not turn it into the result that the car and team deserved. We will continue to push hard developing our car in the next week and hopefully we will show up to Road America with a great car and turn that into the result we are looking for!”

Earlier in the day, in the EMCO Gears Classic Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race, Nate Norenberg and Josh Hurley captured their best result of the year when they drove their no. 161 APR VW GTI to sixth.

“It was an up and down weekend,” said Norenberg, who made up ten spots from his starting position of 24th to hand the car over to Hurley in 14th. “Starting 24th I had a lot of work to do but I love those challenges! For a majority of my stint I was sandwiched between two very well known and extremely experience drivers – Gunnar Jeannette and Andy Lally. It was my goal to hold my ground or advance position to prove a point. I made up some solid ground throughout my stint before handing over Josh to take it home. We had a strong car but the competition was also very strong. We had a bobble in the pits but Josh fought his way back into the top-10 with a 6th place finish. A very positive run for us and for APR!”

His teammates would all finish in a line, but unfortunately, several positions behind. Daniel LaRiva and Christian Perez drove the no. 191 APR VW Jetta GLI to 20th, with Juan Alvarez and Juan Pablo Sierra 21st in the no. 131 APR VW Jetta GLI and David Cheng and Aleks Altberg 22nd in the no. 171 APR VW GTI.

The next event will be the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series 250 Driven by VisitFlorida.com, held in conjunction with the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Altberg paces CTSCC Team to Qualify Sixth in Close ST field

June 8, 2012 (Lexington, Ohio) – The rolling hills of Mid-Ohio are a complete change of scenery from the street circuit of Belle Isle, but APR Motorsport was prepared for the change in scenery. After a relatively quiet week, where the team only raced its Rolex Series Audi R8 Grand-Am in Belle Isle, the entire team – and additional five Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge cars – took to the track for Friday’s qualifying sessions.

Returning to qualifying duties in the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am, Dr. Jim Norman put in a solid performance in Friday’s fifteen-minute qualifying session to put the car 11th on the grid for Saturday’s GRAND-AM Rolex Series EMCO Gears Classic.

“We’re definitely looking for a little more speed out of the R8, but we do have a really consistent car that will be good throughout the race,” said Norman. “With where the car has been at this season, we knew that Mid-Ohio would be a struggle but the car has been better than we expected. We’d like to get a strong finish for all the guys at APR Motorsport who have been working so hard on the car all year.”

Aleks Altberg led the four APR VW’s in a caution-filled qualifying session for the CTSCC Emco Gears Classic. With limited green flag time for all of the ST-class cars, Altberg clicked off a 1:37.252, good for sixth, his second top-ten qualifying effort of the 2012 season.

Daniel LaRiva drove his no. 191 VW Jetta GLI to 23rd on the grid. With his qualifying time further reduced due to a penalty, Nate Norenberg only managed one flying lap to end up right behind LaRiva at 24th on the grid in the no. 161 APR VW GTI – just ahead of teammate Juan Alvarez, in the no. 131 APR VW Jetta GLI, in 25th.

“I think we may have gotten a bit lucky by getting a clean lap in the qualifying session, but David (Cheng) and I have been really happy with our APR VW this weekend,” said Altberg. “We both are enjoying Mid-Ohio and the car is working well. As crazy as some of these starts have been this year, I just want to have a clean start and turn the car over to David in good shape.”

The team’s no. 41 APR Audi S4, which had a new driver combination in Hector Guerrero and Alex Popow, will not make the race after Guerrero went off course and made heavy contact with the turn two barrier. Hitting oil after a car in front of him blew an engine, the damage was sufficient to park the Audi for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday’s CTSCC race will start at 11:00 AM ET, with the Rolex Series race following at 4:30 PM ET. The Rolex Series race will be broadcast live on SPEED Channel.

Team’s Rolex Series and CTSCC Squads are Back with Alex Popow and Hector Guerrero Moving to GS-class Audi S4

June 7, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – The APR Motorsport team reached a milestone in last weekend’s Chevrolet Grand-Am Detroit 200, when Dion von Moltke led the first laps for the Audi R8 Grand-Am in Rolex Series competition. The day before, when von Moltke recorded the team’s best qualifying effort of 4th, his teammate Dr. Jim Norman topped the practice charts for the first time in the Audi.

Although the car would ultimately finish eleventh in the race after von Moltke slid into the tire wall during a brief rain shower, the team was enthused by its breakthrough performance and now looks forward to the different challenge of the permanent circuit at Mid-Ohio.

After what can only be described as a ‘hectic’ CTSCC race at New Jersey Motorsports Park, APR Motorsport is looking for strong results in Mid-Ohio that eluded them in New Jersey. The team’s GS-class Audi S4 returns this weekend, with a new driver lineup. Alex Popow and Hector Guerrero will partner in the four-wheel-drive machine for the first time this season, and are scheduled to compete in the car for the rest of the CTSCC season.

After having a car land on top of him at the start of the New Jersey race, Nate Norenberg will return with co-driver Josh Hurley in the no. 161 APR VW GTI. Consistently the fastest of the APR VW’s throughout the 2012 season, Norenberg and Hurley were fast even after the heavy impact at the start of the New Jersey race – running as high as eighth in the race’s second hour – before being slowed by damage caused in the crash, causing Hurley to fade to 22nd by the end of the race.

Their teammates, Juan Pablo Sierra and Juan Alvarez, in the no. 131 APR VW Jetta GLI, are coming off of their best CTSCC race of the season after finishing 11th in New Jersey. A strong run was enjoyed by the sister Jetta, the no. 191 APR Jetta GLI of Christian LaRiva and Daniel Perez, which ran as high as third until a late-race stop for fuel.

In the no. 171 APR VW GTI, drivers David Cheng and Aleks Altberg were forced into retirement with an electrical problem. The duo has had numerous top-10 finishes thwarted by bad luck, and are looking to reverse that trend in Mid-Ohio.

Team Recovers From Contact with Wall to Narrowly Miss First Top-10

June 4, 2012 (Detroit, Mich.) – A rollercoaster day capped a up-and-down weekend for the APR Motorsport team during the fifth round of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series. The two-hour contest on the street circuit on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan would mark a historic first for APR Motorsport and Audi Sport in Grand-Am competition.

After running in fifth position in the early stages of the race in the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am, Dion von Moltke inherited the lead when he stayed out while the GT cars ahead of him chose to pit under a full course caution period. When the race went green, von Moltke led the first laps for the Audi R8 in a North American professional racing series.

While leading, a brief rain shower fell on the south side of the Belle Isle circuit. Von Moltke arrived into turn one and the Audi R8 Grand-Am swapped ends, sending him sliding into the tire wall outside of turn one. While the car sustained no major damage, von Moltke needed assistance pulling the Audi out of the tire wall, and the car would lose two laps as a result. Once back underway, the APR Motorsport team gave the car a full service and Dr. Jim Norman replaced von Moltke at the wheel.

Norman would have a trouble-free stint at the wheel, putting the Audi in a position to take advantage of the wave-by twice under caution, putting the Audi back on the lead lap. When an additional caution period fell with minutes remaining in the race, the team elected to put von Moltke back in the car and mount a new set of fresh Continental tires. Armed with the new rubber, von Moltke made up several spots in the closing laps, finishing in eleventh position. Von Moltke also set the fastest lap of the race on his final lap, taking the checkered lap while running a 1:29.079.

“First of all, I’m really sorry for the guys that I made a mistake and cost us a great finish,” said von Moltke. “The car was hooked up and was running really well, I just got caught out going into turn one with that brief shower that made it much slicker than I anticipated. It’s really unfortunate because I know the team has worked hard to improve the car and the guys worked hard in the rain and wind all weekend to prepare the car so well. It was a great feeling to lead our first laps with the Audi R8 Grand-Am. This is disappointing, but we’ll move on and be ready for Mid-Ohio next weekend.”

Norman, who topped Friday’s second practice session, was upbeat about the team’s performance following the race.

“Even though we didn’t have a great result, we had a really positive race in Belle Isle,” said Norman. “I’m really happy with how the APR Motorsport team performed this weekend. They were excellent, and chipped away at things all weekend. The car was great in the race, and we had a great strategy. We made some improvements to the car, especially under braking, that really helped the car a lot this weekend. We still had a strong run and just missed our first top-ten, and I really couldn’t be happier with how everybody worked together this weekend.”

Next weekend, APR Motorsport’s Rolex Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge teams will be in action at the EMCO Gears Classic at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. Von Moltke Wheels the APR Audi R8 Grand-Am to Fourth in Qualifying

June 2, 2012 (Detroit, Mich.) – The day started bleak and rainy for the drivers of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, with a heavy rain falling on the 2.1-mile, 14-turn temporary circuit on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan. It started especially bleak for Dion von Moltke as, while taking his first laps on the extremely wet track in the no. 51 APR Audi Grand-Am, he spun and made light contact with the unforgiving concrete barrier exiting the final turn.

However, when he was tasked with qualifying, von Moltke didn’t put a wheel wrong as he drove the car to its best qualifying performance yet in the Rolex Series, taking fourth place as he ran a lap at 1:30.086, averaging 83.121 mph around the Belle Isle circuit.

“The APR Motorsport guys have worked so hard all season, it’s great to finally deliver something good to them,” said von Moltke. “I didn’t have any time in the car after the morning practice when it was wet, and since qualifying was completely dry I was learning something new every lap. The car feels great and I have a lot of confidence in how it is working. After the disappointment this morning, it is great to see improvement every session and finish on a high. We will have to keep the trend going for tomorrow.”

As the team had to work to repair damage from the morning’s practice session, the APR Audi R8 missed most of the second practice but had the car completed in time for Dr. Jim Norman to take part in the afternoon’s Trueman/Aiken session for Pro-Am drivers. Norman would top the Trueman/Aiken session, running what would turn out to be the quickest time overall for the GT field on his final lap, providing the team a big boost ahead of the qualifying session.

“I knew that we were P1 when the session was wet, but I didn’t know anything else after it dried out and we switched to slicks,” said Norman. “So it was great to hear that we were first, and we grabbed it on our last lap. The car felt great, it got better and better throughout the session. Dion did a great job in qualifying and we are very excited for tomorrow’s race.”

May 30, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – Standing out from the crowd of GT cars in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series’ Chevrolet Grand-Am Detroit 200 will be the distinctive no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am. Juan Alvarez and Juan Pablo Sierra Record Career- Best result of Eleventh in Crash-Filled Race

May 12, 2012 (Millville, N.J.) – In a race that saw multiple crashes, penalties, and cars on fire, the no. 131 APR VW Jetta GLI of Juan Alvarez and Juan Pablo Sierra led the way for the team in Saturday’s B+ HEROES 200 presented by BCKSTGR , the fourth round of the 2012 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, as they took the checkered flag in eleventh place.

The day would begin with a narrow escape for Nate Norenberg. Starting 14th in the no. 161 APR VW GTI, Norenberg had nowhere to go when a multi-car incident happened in front of him on the opening lap of the race. A car behind him become airborne, landing on the driver’s side of his no. 161 APR VW GTI and causing heavy damage. Luckily, the damage was only cosmetic and after being checked out by the team under caution, Norenberg was back on his way at the tail end of the CTSCC ST field.

The no. 131 APR VW Jetta GLI took the green flag from 31st position, avoiding the mayhem at the start. Alvarez stayed out of trouble during his opening stint, turning the car over to Sierra in 17th. Sierra would find himself in the thick of a race-long battle with several other cars, sitting in 16th with fifteen minutes remaining. Sierra was able to advance several positions in the final stretch and with a late-race caution, to advance up to 11th position at the checkered.

“That was a very crazy race,” said Sierra. “Juan did a great job and the car was perfect when I got in it. It was a little bit loose at the start but it got better and I was able to be consistent and not burn up the tires too quickly. We were on the tires for a long time and at the end of the race I was battling with three Mazdas, they were able to brake much deeper than I was at the end of the long straight-aways. But I’m happy that Juan and I were able to get a good finish in a very crazy race.”

In the other Jetta, the no. 191 APR VW Jetta GLI, Daniel LaRiva and Christian Perez survived relatively unscathed to cross the line in 20th position. Perez had been as high as third in the middle stages of the race, but a late-race splash for fuel compromised their finishing position.

“The team had a great strategy that helped us get far up the field, but we needed a yellow, and the one that came at the end of the race came too late,” said Perez. “Daniel did a great job at the start and the car was in great shape. We keep getting better each race and more comfortable in the car. We’re happy with how the race went even though we had to pit at the end for fuel.”

After the heavy impact at the start, Nate Norenberg soldiered on in the no. 161 APR VW GTI, falling to 30th before pitting under full course caution to hand the car over to Josh Hurley. Quick work by the APR team enabled Hurley to rejoin the race in eighth position, running with the leaders as the race restarted. However, a mechanical gremlin surfaced – possibly as a result of damage earlier in the race – and Hurley began to lose time. He would eventually take the checkered flag in 22nd position.

“What’s so frustrating is that even though the car was really damaged and very loose, it was still very fast,” said Hurley. “After Nate got run over at the start, the car was very good. We were just outside of the top-five and still gaining time and positions when the car started to slow down. It would have been great to be able to finish where we were running with the car looking so beat up. It’s a testament to the cars that even though it was so damaged we were able to go so fast.”

In the no. 171 APR VW GTI, David Cheng leapt up several positions at the start and race through the field throughout the first 30 minutes of the race. However, while in the midst of a battle for position, his car began to suffer from an electrical problem that would force he and teammate Aleks Altberg out of the race.

“I was able to get good runs and pick up positions each time on the starts and restarts,” said Cheng, who started the car in 21st position. “I was up to ninth and battling with the cars ahead for seventh for a few laps until the car began to have some electrical gremlins. It’s too bad, because I knew we were in a good position and Aleks would have been able to keep us up there.”

The next round of the CTSCC is the EMCO Gears Classic at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio on June 8-9. The B+ HEROES 200 presented by BCKSTGR will be shown on Saturday, May 26th at 2:00 PM ET on SPEED Channel.

No. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am soldiers home in 14th after Multiple Incidents

May 14, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – Not having the race that they were looking for, Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke drove their no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am to a 14th place finish in Sunday’s Global Barter 250 Presented by Susan G. Komen For The Cure at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, N.J.

Norman started the race, running in 12th before being knocked off circuit by a Daytona Prototype. The incident caused him to go a lap down on the GT leader. Von Moltke took over during a green flag stop, but he was hit hard on the right side by another Daytona Prototype, causing the Audi to go down another lap. He would ultimately finish in 14th place.

While the separate incidents would cost the team a chance at the top-10 result that they were seeking, Norman and von Moltke found a real challenge in racing the R8 Grand-Am over the course of a stint at NJMP.

“We know that the R8 is a sleeping giant,” said Norman. “Each race we come a little bit closer to unlocking the potential of the car. APR and Audi are working hard to develop the Grand-Am spec of the car to make it as competitive as it has proven to be in its LMS spec. It isn’t there yet but we are hoping that between now and the stretch of races in June we’ll be able to make some changes to the car that will help us show what it is truly capable of. We all want to see the Audi running at the front.”

Von Moltke, who set top-three times in the car during the final two practice sessions for the Global Barter 250, echoed Norman’s thoughts.

“We learned more about the car this weekend,” said von Moltke. “It was disappointing to lose the laps that we did after Dr. Jim and I had contact with other cars, but we were able to achieve a decent race pace at the end.”

“We have been moving in the right direction at each race so I’m very confident that we will continue to improve. I know APR and Audi Sport are working very hard to find some more speed in the R8 Grand-Am, but I think we are just struggling a bit with the current rules package. But looking ahead to the next race in Detroit, I’m sure the guys will give Dr. Jim and I a competitive car for that race.”

May 13, 2012 (Millville, N.J.) – In his first visit to the technical 2.2-mile, 14 turn New Jersey Motorsports Park Thunderbolt circuit, Dr. Jim Norman was tasked with qualifying the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am for Sunday’s Global Barter 250 presented by the Susan G. Komen For The Cure. In Saturday’s 25-minute qualifying session for the GT cars of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, Norman drove the Audi to 13th on the grid with a time of 1:24.643.

Although his run was interrupted by an off-course excursion caused by a near-miss with the Brumos Racing Porsche with Andrew Davis, Norman’s qualifying effort was a huge improvement over his practice form – nearly two full seconds – which he quickly credited to the effort done by the APR Motorsport staff. In the final practice before qualifying, Norman’s teammate Dion von Moltke put the APR Audi second on the timesheets.

“We’ve been making progress all weekend, biting away at it and making the car a little bit faster each time,” said Norman. “The car is very consistent and will be a great car for the race. We struggled a bit yesterday and the guys rolled the car out this morning, tried some new stuff, and it was really good. Dion was flying in practice and I was much more confident in the car.”

The team has paid particular attention to the technical nature of the NJMP Thunderbolt circuit, which is known for being a challenge for both the drivers and the engineers who determine the chassis setups.

“The tires do go off a little bit after the first four or five laps, and then they stay very consistent for about 20 laps,” said Norman. “Then they really go off. So we have to keep that in mind if we have a long run without yellow flags.”

In the middle of what will undoubtedly be a busy GT class, Norman is planning on having a cautious approach to the start of the two hour and forty-five minute race. He and Moltke are seeking their first top-10 of the season.

“One of my strengths is that I’m able to run very consistent laps,” said Norman. “So my goal is to keep our nose clean and turn a healthy and fast car over to Dion so he can bring it home and get us a strong finish.”

Norman and von Moltke Encounter Teething Problems in Rain-Shortened Race

April 30, 2012 (Homestead, Fla.) – Despite the certainty of rain at the Grand Prix of Miami, the third round of the 2012 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke, drivers of the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am, were excited to race. While Audi’s Quattro system would have been immensely useful in the rainy conditions, von Moltke wheeled the two-wheel-drive R8 Grand-Am to the third quickest time in the final practice session, which was held in the rain.

Von Moltke was tasked with starting the race, taking a combined green/yellow flag to start the race as the field circulated slowly in the heavy rain. When the race did go green, von Moltke moved from his starting position of twelfth as high as seventh, running times on pace with the leading GT cars. During the second of two full course caution periods that were thrown when the conditions got worse, the team pitted the car and put Norman in.

As the race returned to green, Norman began to suffer from a lack of power caused when the computer running the 5.2 liter V10 engine began to go into limp mode. Resetting the Audi’s ECU would temporarily cure the problem, and Norman continued to post strong lap times despite having to perform multiple resets per lap. However, the situation gradually worsened and Norman was forced to pit under green flag conditions. Ultimately, the car would lose two laps to the GT leaders.

Von Moltke would get back in the car but the problems persisted, leaving the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am in seventeenth position when the race was called 50 minutes early due to the conditions.

“The conditions were really, really bad, but if the car hadn’t been breaking up we would have had a really good result,” said Norman. “As bad as the conditions were, the car was actually very good in the rain. I enjoy racing here but I’ve never seen rain like that. We’ll regroup with the APR crew and be ready for the next race in New Jersey.”

Von Moltke, who passed several cars in the opening stint, was also disappointed that the team’s car encountered problems in the wet race.

“I was having a blast out there, the Audi R8 Grand-Am was really good in the rain,” said von Moltke. “But this was the first time we’ve run the car in conditions like that and we encountered a problem that we would never have encountered unless we were in such heavy rain. But the APR guys always do a phenomenal job and I’m really thankful for their support and we know the car will be strong in New Jersey. APR Motorsport’s Audi R8 Grand-Am Is Ready for Sunday’s Race

April 28, 2012 (Homestead, Fla.) – Qualifying for the third round of the 2012 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series season, the Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead-Miami Speedway, was rained out, meaning that Dr. Jim Norman (Tampa, Fla.) and Dion von Moltke (Coral Gables, Fla.), driving the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am will start 12th for Sunday’s two hour and forty-five minute race. Though they did not qualify or take part in an open practice session -which replaced qualifying – they did each run laps in Saturday morning’s practice. Rain began falling midway through the session.

Norman and von Moltke earned the third best time in the GT class practice, timing in at 1:23.957 (98.622 mph) around the 2.3-mile, 11-turn track. That, they said, bodes well for their confidence heading into Sunday’s two-hour, 45-minute race. Sunday’s forecast also calls for rain throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

Von Moltke, who lives about 25 minutes away from Homestead-Miami Speedway and attends Florida International University in Miami, began his racing career across the street from HMS, at the Homestead go-kart track. Though he has won several go-kart races – including a state championship – on that track, he is still seeking his first win at the bigger track. He said the strong run Saturday morning, which was the first time the team ran the Audi R8 in the wet at any point – could bode well for a strong finish Sunday.

“We were all pleasantly surprised with the way the car felt,” von Moltke said. “We didn’t make many changes for the wet (conditions), and it felt good right out of the box. We have a good car in any condition, but I think we may have a more competitive car in the wet. It might be changing tomorrow, you never know, but we’re ready for either.”

Being that the track is von Moltke’s home track, he said that gives him a little extra motivation.

“I really want to change that,” von Moltke said regarding his winless record at HMS. “Obviously, I want to win on every track, but this essentially is my home track. I haven’t raced here that often, but I haven’t had as much success as I’d like. For me, my main focus is bringing Audi its first win in GRAND-AM. To do it on the roval as some people call it would be a great engineering effort by Audi and APR. I think Jim and I have a good chance to do that.”

Norman is competing in his first race at Homestead-Miami Speedway in GRAND-AM, but for the fifth time in any series. In fact, he competed a few weeks ago in another race – in similar conditions. He has mixed feelings about running in the rain, but doesn’t believe it will make a difference in terms of the team’s finishing position.

“It was very encouraging, and I was very surprised,” Norman said. “I’d love to see a dry race for the fans, but from a personal standpoint, I think the wet weather really favors us. Both drivers love the rain – I love driving in the rain – so we stand to have a great result in the rain.”

The Grand Prix of Miami is scheduled to start shortly after 1 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast live on SPEED Channel and MRN Radio.

Ian Baas, Aleks Altberg finish 16th in Street Tuner class at Homestead-Miami Speedway

April 28, 2012 (Homestead, Mia.) – It was an up-and-down day for the drivers of APR Motorsports’ five Volkswagens in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Street Tuner class.

Ian Baas (Noblesville, Ind.) and Aleks Altberg (Mill Valley, Calif.) earned the team’s best finish, 16th, in the No. 171 APR Tuned VW GTI. Altberg started 11th but passed five cars on the opening of 82 laps, his sights set on the leaders as he moved to sixth.

However, a mechanical problem on Lap 3 dropped Altberg through the field, as he rolled around the track to pit lane. A caution period allowed the crew to make quick repairs, though Altberg fell one lap behind the leaders. Baas took controls of the No. 171 at the 56-minute mark, or Lap 30, and steadily worked through the field. He moved into the top 10 with just under an hour to go, and was seventh with 30 minutes remaining. However, he faded in the final 15 minutes, back to 16th.

“I was really happy with the car initially,” Baas said. “The strategy played into our favor following the unfortunate event at the beginning. The car was holding strong in the top 10. Unfortunately, we just don’t know what happened at the end. I was giving it everything I got.”

One spot behind Baas and Altberg were rookies Christian Perez (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Daniel La Riva (Lecheria, Venezuela) in the No. 191 APR Tuned/Motul Volkswagen Jetta. La Riva was moving through the field when, at the 45-minute mark, he made contact with a car spinning in turn six. With nowhere to go, La Riva made contact with an out-of-control Ford Focus, knocking the car out of alignment and damaging the left rear. Still, he managed to run strong until he gave the car to Perez at the 56-minute mark.

Fighting handling problems thereafter, Perez said he just wanted to bring the car home without further incident. He did so, earning 17th.

“The toe was knocked out from the incident, but the car was still running well when I took over,” Perez said. “We were able to pick up the pace considerably when we took on slick tires, and I was able to manage everything from there. We had a little bit of an overheating issue with the brakes from the incident, but that didn’t affect us much.”

Dion von Moltke (Coral Gables, Fla.) and Juan Alvarez (Maracay, Venezuela) finished 19th in the No. 131 APR Tuned/Motul Volkswagen GTI. Taking the wheel from Alvarez on the lead lap, von Moltke also worked through the ST class field and into the top 20. He ran as high as 17th coming to the white flag, but an incident with a Mini Cooper in turn four sent both cars spinning and into the wall. Von Moltke regrouped and brought the car home to the checkered flag for the team’s third top-20 finish.

“I did whatever I could; I just couldn’t keep up with some of the guys,” said von Moltke, who will compete in Sunday’s Grand Prix of Miami in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series for APR Motorsport in the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am. “But I had a blast today with APR. They did a great job giving me a good car. Hopefully they can continue to develop the car, and that I’ll be back with Juan in the future challenging for a win.”

Josh Hurley (Gainesville, Fla.) and Nate Norenberg (Plymouth, Minn.) were among the quickest duo of the day in the No. 161 APR Tuned/Motul Volkswagen GTIs. Starting 38th after a qualifying infraction on Friday, Norenberg bolted through the field. He was running 22nd in the first 15 minutes, and had raced his way to 13th before pitting on Lap 20 for fuel, four tires and a driver change.

As pit stops cycled through, Hurley, a former series rookie of the year, cycled back toward the front. He had jumped all the way to ninth before fuel pickup problems caused him to drop back. Finally, contact with another car ended in a broken radiator, and he retired after 32nd, completing 44 laps.

“We had a really fast car,” Hurley said. “There seemed to be a problem, so I fell back, but kept regaining the positions; it was like Groundhog’s Day. I made a small mistake, and hit another guy.”

Like his teammates, Hector Guerrero (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) was moving through the field in attempt to hand the No. 181 APR Tuned/Motul Volkswagen GTI over to co-driver Juan Pablo Serra (Puebla, Mexico). However, an incident at the 50-minute mark ended that. A driver of one of the Mini Coopers drifted up the track, pinching Guerrero between him and another car. The driver of the third car hit Guerrero’s GTI in the right rear, turning him nearly head-on into the wall, just before the start/finish line. Once his car stopped at Turn 1, he got out of the car, and was ultimately checked and released from the infield care center.

“I was just trying to keep a specific pace until the driver change,” Guerrero said. “I think the driver of the Mini thought he was clear, but he unfortunately wasn’t, and ran into me.”

Saturday’s two-and-a-half hour race will be televised on SPEED at noon ET on Saturday, May 12. The next race on the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge schedule is Saturday, May 12, at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, N.J.

Team’s Audi R8 Grand-Am looks for another strong run, while von Molkte and Baas Are Back in APR’s ST-class VW’s in Homestead

April 23, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – While the beaches of South Beach aren’t too far away from Homestead-Miami Speedway, a sunny day on the beach with a Pina Colada in hand is not what the APR Motorsport team has in mind for this weekend’s Grand Prix of Miami.

APR Motorsport’s Rolex Series drivers Dion von Moltke and Dr. Jim Norman, as well as CTSCC driver Josh Hurley, call the Grand Prix of Miami their home event as all three live in Florida. Von Moltke, a student at Florida International University, lives in Coral Cables, with Norman from Tampa Bay and Hurley from Gainesville.

The no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am enjoyed a strong run at last month’s Porsche 250 at Barber Motorsports Park, employed an alternate fuel strategy that allowed the car to advance as high as second place. A late race caution negated their fuel advantage, but the team left pleased with the progress made in the break between Daytona and Barber.

Gainesville resident Josh Hurley, teamed with Nate Norenberg in the no. 161 APR VW GTI, led the charge at Barber for the team’s five ST-class cars at Barber, finishing twelfth on the strength of Norenberg’s qualifying effort of sixth. The two will be looking to repeat APR’s winning form at Homestead-Miami last year.

The team’s no. 171 APR VW GTI was retired after Aleks Altberg’s incident on the final lap at Barber. APR Motorsport has built a ‘new’ no. 171, which is actually a previous generation Mk. Long yellows and threatening skies factor into challenging race at Barber Motorsports Park

April 2, 2012 (Birmingham, Ala.) – Saturday’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race at Barber Motorsports Park will be remembered for a long time as one of the wildest races in recent memory. In a race filled with long caution periods and multiple incidents, APR Motorsport’s six-car team didn’t escape the carnage but still banked solid points for its ST-class Volkswagens.

When seventy-five CTSCC cars took the green flag, a huge crash began in turn one which ultimately claimed the no. 41 APR Audi S4. Started by Nelson Canache, the Audi was hardly into turn one when it was hit hard from the left side, damaging the car’s intercooler piping.

With the bulk of the first hour run under caution, the team’s starting drivers enjoyed very little green flag driving before the team opted to pit once the minimum drive requirement was fulfilled. With most of its cars going off-strategy to the leaders, hoping to gain an advantage on track position, all five of its VW’s ran together in the middle of the field through the middle of the race, with the no. 161 VW GTI of Josh Hurley – which was qualified sixth by Nate Norenberg – leading the group.

All the cars were ultimately frustrated by a series of ill-timed full course caution periods, but Hurley and Aleks Altberg, in the no. 171 APR VW GTI, were able to move forward in the closing stages as dark skies crept in and rain began to fall on the circuit. With Hurley up to 12th and Altberg battling to 13th, a decent finish was in the cards until the final corner of the last lap when Altberg and a competitor made contact, sending Altberg into a heavy crash and crippling his VW.

“We had a miscue during our pitstop,” said Hurley. “Unfortunately, our seat adjuster broke and I wasn’t able to get comfortable in the car during my stint. The car wasn’t very good on new tires, but on old tires it was very good. We were just stuck with bad track position during the entire race with the way the yellows fell. We should have been in the top-5, but at least we left with some points.”

Despite a heavy impact, Altberg stepped out of his APR VW GTI with no injuries.

“I made some rookie mistakes,” said Altberg. “I was definitely overdriving towards the end of the race since we had been stuck in the back the whole race. Josh (Hurley) told us how to deal with the tires going off, which helped me a lot. As for the crash, it takes two cars to crash. I could have left him more room, and he could have left me more room. It’s unfortunate but it happens and we’ll move on to the next one. I just really wanted to get to the finish for all the hard work that the guys put in this weekend, but I’m okay thanks to how strong and safe the car is.”

Not far behind, Juan Pablo Sierra, in the no. 181 APR VW Jetta GLI, and Alex Popow, a late substitution in the no. 191 APR VW Jetta GLI, also improved several positions in the closing stages to finish 16th and 17th in ST. The no. 191 APR VW Jetta GLI of Daniel La Riva and Christian Perez had a strong run of their own derailed when they lost several laps in the pits with a mechanical problem.

“What a crazy race!” said Sierra. ” I was fighting the whole time with many other cars – Honda’s, MINI’s, and BMW’s – and I learned a lot today about racing with other cars that were faster, and about how to defend my position. I know more about what we need to develop on the car, and what I need to do to drive with bad tires. I need to change my driving style a bit, to be more gentle, to take care of the tires. But I’m adapting more and learning a lot each time I drive.”

The CTSCC race from Barber Motorsports Park will be shown on Saturday, April 8, at 12:00 PM ET. The next round of the CTSCC is the Kia 200 at Homestead Miami Speedway, on April 27-28. That race will be shown on SPEED Channel on Saturday, May 12, at 12:00 PM ET.

Norman and von Moltke enjoy strong run at APR Motorsport’s home track at Barber Motorsports Park

April 2, 2012 (Birmingham, Ala.) – With Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke at the helm of the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am, APR Motorsport – from nearby Opelika, Ala. – put on a strong show in front of its home crowd at Barber Motorsports Park on Saturday afternoon and narrowly missed the team’s first top-ten in Rolex Series GT action. At the end of the two hour and forty-five minute race, von Moltke took the checkered flag in 11th place.

When von Moltke’s qualifying run to seventh was disallowed because of a ride-height infringement – a bolt on the Audi R8 Grand-Am’s front splitter was too low – the team started from the back of the GT field with Norman at the wheel. From shotgun on the field, Norman made up six positions before turning the car over to von Moltke. The team went on an alternate strategy to the leaders, pitting for splashes of fuel during the early caution periods of the race. By extending the pit stop window, the team would be in great shape for the end of the race.

In the middle part of the race, von Moltke was able to stay on track longer than the bulk of the GT field, getting the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am as high as second during pitstops. After the APR Motorsport team executed a perfect pitstop with under 45 minutes remaining, von Moltke was back in the hunt and thrust into a battle with the Marsh Racing Corvette of Eric Curran. However, a full course caution period with under ten minutes remaining negated von Moltke’s fuel advantage. A frantic restart with only minutes remaining saw von Moltke get past Curran for good when the Corvette slipped off course, putting him in eleventh at the finish.

“It’s clear to see the progression of the Audi R8 from Daytona to now,” said von Moltke. “On new tires and over a single lap, we are just as fast as any other car out there. But Barber is so hard on tires, and you lose so much grip when they fall off, that you really need to be patient. It’s the same for everyone. Our car was great over a stint at Daytona, but we have definitely found more speed. We enjoyed a bit of a home town advantage here and had a great time with all of our supporters who came to cheer for us, and thanks to Parathyroid.com, PR Newswire, and South Africa Airways for their support.”

The abrasive surface of the Barber circuit also posed a challenge for Norman, who drove a strong opening stint in the no. 51 APR Audi R8.

“We had a solid weekend, and we learned a lot about our Audi,” said Norman. “The car is great on new tires, but Barber is extremely tough on tires and you must be extremely patient to save them – especially the rears. After twenty laps they fall way off. But thanks to the team, the car was great and we showed we can be competitive.”
Team owner Stephen Hooks was thrilled to see the Audi perform well in front of the hometown crowd.

“To have a strong result here at our home track, with Dr. Jim and Dion battling all day long, putting on a show in front of all of our friends, family, and staff is a great feeling,” said Hooks. “Everyone has worked very hard since Daytona and it is great to have progress and get a good result.
